Comment Avatars
When your website visitors place a comments on one of your blog posts, each comment is accompanied by a small image. These images are called avatars.
An Example of Some Comment Avatars
Below is a screenshot of one of my blog posts where a number of people have commented. As you can see two comments are accompanied by the commenter’s own choice of avatar, but everyone else, because they’ve not set up an avatar to represent them in blog discussions, have a generated one. In your WordPress setup, this is known as the default avatar.

Can You Control the Default Avatars on Your Site?
The generated avatars are created by your WordPress site, and to some extent you can control the comment avatars that show up on your site in the case where the commenter has not set up his own avatar.
Setting The Default Comment Avatar
- Go to your WordPress dashboard, and
- on the left hand side menu click on Settings.
- Next (still in the left hand side menu) click on Discussion, then
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and you’ll see something like the screenshot below
- Select an option that suits you, then click on “Save Changes”
